INSPECTION OF OIL AND GAS PIPELINES
Pipelines must be inspected periodically to verify and document the quality of their welds. The inspection of weld seams on installations predating current standards is especially important. X-ray inspections of pipelines can be conducted efficiently and with great accuracy, either from the inside by using an X-ray pipeline crawler or from the outside, using directional X-ray sources.

SYSTEMS SUITED FOR CRAWLER AND DIGITAL INTEGRATION
Pipeline crawlers are remotely operated, battery-driven vehicles with portable panoramic X-ray systems like the PXS EVO 200P and PXS EVO 300P integrated. The crawlers can complete exposure of a circular weld seam in one go due to their 360˚ X-ray beam coverage of the PXS EVO panoramic. Single-wall shots achieve short exposure time with a minimized film-focus distance. COMET has decades of experience in this field. Over the past few years, our focus has been on improving the X-ray tube and electronic module solutions for full integration into the chassis and the control system of the pipeline crawler.
 
COMET’s X-ray source is based on constant potential X-ray energy for optimized penetration, combined with highly efficient power electronics, maximizing the overall endurance of the pipeline crawler system. When operating a battery-driven pipeline crawler with a limited amount of battery energy available for X-ray exposure and propulsion, the X-ray penetration and energy efficiency are the limiting factors of the operation.
 
An essential part of a crawler solution, based on a COMET tube head, is the documentation and support for the integration of the X-ray part into the crawler system, both of which are provided by COMET as high-quality services.
 
Digital pipe scanners do a complete inspection of the entire circumferential weld seam by rotating the X-ray source and the image detector around the pipe. The technique requires high penetrative power and efficient cooling to support long-term exposures in harsh environmental conditions. Such challenging demands are fully met by COMET’s PXS EVO directional.
